Vintage Crochet - Some "Pretty Trimmings" from 1918

From the October (not January, as I mistakenly posted yesterday), 1918 issue of Needlecraft magazine and complete with ads, some "pretty trimmings" to make - most of these were probably intended as lingerie or baby edgings.  Left-click to enlarge.  EDITED TO ADD:  this is from a copy that I own, but the Antique Pattern Library has a free pdf of this issue to download here

Hoist, Petard, Own

"Texas is fighting a lawsuit brought by a prison guard who says she was forced to stay at work during labor pains when she was seven months pregnant. One of the arguments by state lawyer is that the fetus had no rights."

Caturday!

This is Aurora. She is the mayor of Talkeetna, AK (population 1,000 and change), having been elected by popular vote when her predecessor - also a cat - passed away.  She is the third cat to hold the office.

That is a dogsled she's sleeping in.  It hangs from the ceiling in the grocery/general store, which is also the mayor's office.

Quote of the Day

Elsie's costume was sort of Gypsy Rose Lee meets Vivienne Westwood - though it didn't look as if they had been pleased to see each other. ~ L. C. Tyler

Domestica felicitas

After eight hours in a train (followed the next day by six hours on a plane), we are back, and boy has Batdog been giving us what-for.

Floreat Alaska

Mt Denali hiding behind the clouds and a patch of fireweed and yarrow.

The variety and quantity of wildflowers up here is breathtaking.

Point s of View

One of the deckhands has scooped a chunk of glacier out of the water and is displaying it.

First Tourist: That is one chunk of ice!

Second Tourist: Make a helluva Martini.

Thank You Very Much, I'll Be Here All Week

SOMEBODY dropped his glasses overboard this morning.

He (pridefully): But I was still the first person to spot those dolphins!

Me: That's good. Every trip needs a porpoise.

CAPTAIN, I THINK SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY SEXTANT

Trying to calculate our current lat/long and Google Maps is insisting that I'm twelve nautical miles S/SW of Goolwa Beach, Australia.

Rebooted and tried again and now it says I'm at 9527+7QF, Hyderabad -Karimnagar Highway, Beside LMD Police Station, Ramakrishna Colony, Telangana 505481, India, which seems both oddly precise and terribly inaccurate.

Bon Voyage

And we are off!  To Vancouver, Ketchikan, Sitka, Haines, Juneau, Yakutat, Valdez, Seward, Talkeetna, Denali and Anchorage (at 0430 tomorrow - why does travel so often involve getting up at an ungodly hour?)

This Is What You Get When You Fire A Perfectly Good Public Health Director

And replace him with a quack.

Ron DeSantis has been trying to drag Florida back into the Dark Ages, and apparently he's doing a good job of it; there have been fifty cases of leprosy in the state since January.

Vintage Sewing - Summer Outfits, 1920s

Downloaded from Pinterest and the link is lost, but here are two ideas for summer, a peasant blouse and a peignoir (although saut-de-lit sounds more descriptive). In French, but the diagrams should be easy to follow.

From the 1920-22 time-period and the French magazine Les Modes De La Femme.
