The Online Bookshelf-Noble Deeds of the World's Heroines

Published by the Religious Tract Society of London in 1903, this book undoubtedly became a Christmas or graduation gift for a generation of Anglo-Saxon schoolgirls. I'm just surprised Kate Barlass and Grace Darling were not included. Full text can be downloaded from Project Gutenberg, here.

  1. I had some trouble figuring out what/who was holding the reins. I finally found her face.

It's reminiscent of the scene in The Fellowship of the Ring where our heroes cross the Bruinen river to get into Rivendell, and the bigwigs cause the river to flood with an illusion of rampant horses.

    Geekery.

  2. I confess. I had to look up Kate Barlass and Grace Darling. I remembered the story about Kate after I read it. I don't remember the story about Grace. Thanks for sharing.
