There has been a sharp uptick in the number of emails I'm getting from helpful gentlemen in Nigeria and Singapore who want to give me fourteen million dollars. I used to get two or three per week; now it's two or three per day.
Spammers seem to be getting hungrier, too. Guy posted a comment on my neighborhood site that the fabric shop mentioned in a news post is now open and "is great facility" or some such. It made me a little suspicious that his English wasn't up to snuff (and in a different way from a mere semi-literate local), so I looked up his IP: Pakistan.
The server logs then showed that he got there via a Google search for '"business news" "powered by wordpress" "leave comment"'. Well, aren't *we* a clever little git.
The 419 scammers amuse me far more than they really ought to. I still get a giggle about the one who wanted me to assign him the "power of Anthony" over my finances.
Forward them to your State Atty General's office. I did. Not only did the emails stop but it helped build a case against them here in CT. Isn't amazing how they can find such "good people" from so far away?
Anon: The problem with forwarding anything to my state's Atty General is I live in Illinois. Our Atty General is too busy investigating our own scumbags :-O

Don't you wish they were genuine? *sigh*

ReplyDeleteI feel so betrayed! I thought I was special -- that they would come to me because they know what an outstanding person I am.
ReplyDeleteAnd now it turns out they think you're special too.
whisperingI think they may be sending this to other people too.
