My cat, Gwen, did this for all of her 12 years untill I got a tall stand where the free water was banned. She was pissed. I was happy not to clean up pine needles ala Cat.
Back when I had cats *and* Christmas trees, they all thought Christmas tree water was the best! A few of them then proceded to explore the "garnish"--imagine reaching through tinsel, garlands, lights, ornaments, etc., and trying to remove kitty clinging to trunk with all 18 claws without, erm, catastrophe!
