They had a basket full of junk jewelry displayed at the Mission thrift shop the other day. I picked up a few pieces, some quite nice.
Where I really hit the mother lode, however, was in a sandwich baggie full of orphan earrings. There are flowers and leaves;
There are seashells;
Gemstones of breathtaking fauxity;
Pearls;
Hoops;
Dangles (at what era in American fashion was it trendy to wear red plastic Louisville sluggers in one's ears, I wonder);
A couple of bold and not unbecoming pieces in Art Deco style;
And some very odd odds and ends.
A couple had mates; pity the pretty green ones are plastic.
And finally the pieces de la resistance; the Jellyfish earrings!
I really couldn't get a better picture although I tried several times. I think the camera kept flinching. And no, I have no idea what I'm going to do with them. But for a dollar ninety-nine for the whole bag, how could I pass them up?
(Reserve Cat says why you buy joolry, Ma? Why you not buy more pritty string for me to knock under da bed?)
What a great find! Now, whatcha gonna do wit it awl??? LOL! Your kitty is so cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great bag of loot. I especially like the cat pin. Around here all the thrift stores have really raised the prices on any jewelery even the cheap plastic stuff.
ReplyDeleteFun! If I dug deep enough I might find mates to a couple of those... LOL
ReplyDeleteWow what a haul! You can repurpose some of them as pins or create some necklaces and bracelets from them. Just need to pull off the backs to do that. At least your cat doesnt eat the string does it? Cause I have one that will try to eat the strings on my fabric if they are hanging down. Not good! And I have another cat that likes to do the grab and steal thing with any ball of yarn. The things that they think of!
ReplyDeleteRochelle, the price of junk jewelry hasn't gone up here, but the selection is usually pretty mundane. I got lucky.
ReplyDeleteI need to polish that string of silver beads and restring them (they're too short; I'm not a choker gal).
Lousiville Slugger was from the hot bed of style, the late 1980's.
ReplyDeleteYour "Deco" pieces are also from that hotbed of style. But the Jelly fish earrings make it all worth while!
I think I have the matches to all of your orphaned earrings, except maybe the Louisville slugger one (!?). I bought a jar of "junk" jewelry from an antique store, and so many of the pieces are the same, it's just uncanny! Great blog, btw - glad I found it. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I thought the baseball bat was probably 1980's -- we needed long earrings to offset our big hair, back then.
ReplyDelete(Those of us who had big hair, that is).
The Art Deco style pieces are also 80's, possibly 90's. I'm thinking the square one might convert to a shawl pin.
OMGWTFBBQBACONVINTAGEJEWELRY!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet shopping trip! And it's amazing that the brooch has made it all these years still attached to its original card from the store.
Gorgeous! You really hit the mother load!
