  4. Whoever owns the right to these older patterns is really missing a trick -- they should be reissued (maybe as a collection on CD).

    1. Any chance I can get this doe and fawn pattern from you? It was displayed in my grandparents home growing up but burnt in a fire. I would love to be able to duplicate it for my own home and family

  7. You are lucky. My grandmother sewed and embroidered for seventy years and...ARGH!...got rid of all of her older patterns before she died. I could have cried.

  8. I bought this last year - it's huge! Will take ages when I do make a start. It is really lovely though!

  9. I bought this framed at Goodwill last week . Framed it is 36 x 30! It is signed on the back made by Doris Campbell June 20, 1951. It made me sad that the family didn't keep it.

  10. You run across them in thrift shops -- the embroidered and knitted/crocheted pieces that the family doesn't want (assuming there is a family).

  11. I just acquired this pattern and material from my grandmother still in its original package. My grandmother had already copied it onto a piece of material. Does anyone know if the colors are DMC?

    1. Yes DMC .. the magazine I have shows the Stag that matches the doe and fawn. Color numbers too if needed.

  12. I'll see if I can find the magazine -- right now my sewing/craft room looks like a tornado struck it.

Given the dominance in the US market of the DMC brand, it's very possible. Have you tried taking the kit chart into a needlework shop and comparing the colors?

  13. Okay -- took me long enough but I went through six issues of MNC starting in 1956 and although the kits were not advertised in every issue, I did find three of them.

They had to be ordered from a New Jersey-based department store chain called Bambergers. At first you could order either the pattern, or the kit that included the embroidery floss - presumably the pattern included a chart with recommended colors. By 1959 you could only order the kit.

The ads unfortunately don't contain any information on the floss at all, nor are there any color charts.

    Sorry!

  14. Whoops! I found this on ebay.

Maybe the vendor can tell you if there's a chart included.

  15. I have done the Stag in counted cross stitch and I would really like to do the matching doe and fawn. My mother had the stamped pattern and I remember watching her working on it.

  16. I don't have the kit, as I explained above - this is a scan of a pattern from one of my old 1950's McCall's magazines.

Sometimes they are available on eBay, though.
