My father was a chef and that's how he checked everything - he would squeeze and pinch and poke with his bare hands. If you ever watch Jacques Pepin, he does that too. All his gestures in the kitchen remind me of my father. I don't get that memory jog watching the modern TV chefs.
You are a lucky woman to have such a brave man around the house, a true hero.
