Thanks for this - and for the edging pattern you posted before Christmas. I have the Knitting for Dolls books which are patterns from turn of the last century found in magazines of the time. Most of them don't include edging patterns which would be great for the sewn garments some of my old dolls need, too.
Anyone know if I can substitute lace wt wool for size 20 crochet cotton? I don't like knitting with stiff cotton as my stitches just don't look right, but haven't seen any of the lovely old rayon thread around anywhere.
Sam - You don't want to listen to what I say when trying to knit lace from a chart. I find the written patterns easier as, after a while, the repeat becomes a chant in my head that helps keep my place better than trying to remember what the symbol in a square on a chart sitting in front of me means. Of course, only coloured patterns were charted when I learned to knit, and abbreviations were pretty standard, so it could be just what I'm used to. This pattern is actually pretty easy as lace goes.
Given the cussing coming from my sister on her lace scarf, I wonder if I can convince her to make this?

Bunny, have you considered trying DMC tatting thread?
