Caturday!
At last week's visit, Dr Tinyvet said that She Who Shall Remain Nameless needed to increase her thyroid dose as her levels were still too low. Twice daily one of us wrassles a pill down her throat and then holds on to her neck until we feel her swallow.
I was cleaning this morning and guess what I found? She's been tucking the little suckers into her cheek and spitting them out under the daybed.
HA!! Our Old Lady Kitty (18 this year) has BAD flea allergy, even tho she doesn't get fleas; we let her outside, supervised, a couple times a week, enough to make her itch. So we need to give her a Comfortis to keep her comfortable... except for those awkward 15 minutes wrestling your frail little Lady who fervently HATES you and your Evil Tasting Poison you're trying to throttle her with. The things we do for feline friends ...
ReplyDeletePepperReed, have you tried any of the "one spot" treatments? Advantix is a good brand - but that's for fleas, not allergic reactions. Or maybe an injection? My cat have always been pretty good about letting me give them shots.
ReplyDeleteWe've tried those "pill pockets", where you stuff the pill inside and squeeze it shut, and theoretically the cat will swallow the treat without realizing there's medicine in it. Fat chance! You'd be amazed at how far a pill can go with a good shake of the head. (Or maybe you wouldn't, come to think of it.)
What always fun is when you are trying to get a pill into Big Daddy - one end or the other, frankly - and Little Girl hears him yelling and comes in to protect him, so you have eight clawed feet to deal with, instead of just two.
Try crushing the pill into Her Spit-it-out-ness's food. Worked for my cat who learned to spit the pills in the potted plant (had miracle gro pearls in it to hide the evidence).
ReplyDeleteOur lovely Jasmine who had a special trick of jumping tucked up like a ball and seemingly without effort (yogic flying, anyone?) used to stay at the vet's whenever she needed meds. Even the vet couldn't handle her and used to get out his elbow length leather gauntlets. She got her meds from one of the fearless staff who tossed a pill down her throat every time Jas opened her mouth to fuff at her. It was a trade off: pay or be shredded up to the elbow.
ReplyDeleteAnimals and medicine. With dogs it's so easy, rub it in bacon, roll it into bacon, and throw it at them. Cats, I wouldn't even dare.... :)
