A knitted "chair set" from the days when upholstered furniture had to last a lifetime. McCall's Needlework & Crafts, Summer 1945. The pattern is on my Flickr account.
My grandmother had those on every chair in her living room. My sister and I used to play "bride" with them, and sometimes - although we are not Catholic - we'd bobby-pin the arm covers over our foreheads and be "nuns". The whole concept fascinated us, but we had no idea what is was nuns *did*.
