When I was in my teens, my mum had a green parrot, very similar to the one in the picture. Our cats and dog gave Walter a w-i-d-e berth. I don't know if any of them had ever gotten bitten, but we never had any trouble. Walter's wing had been injured, so he couldn't fly. He walked everywhere, and when you were in the basement it sounded as if the dog was walking across the floor. Walter would sometimes pick up a piece of Muffin's kibble, and the poor dog would stand there and quiver, but she never went after the bird.
My parents used to keep a supply of chicken bones on hand, and when they introduced visiting youngsters to the bird, one of them would tell them Walter would bite, and then hand the bird a bone - which he would bite in half. The kids never put their fingers near the cage!
You're parents are smart. Chicken bones? Who would have thought of that one? Isn't it interesting that there's always one in the group who is boss, and size doesn't have much to do with it.
