A pair of soakers from Smart Knitting and Needlework, Winter 1951. Knit a pair to delight (or horrify) a mother-to-be and tell her this was what families used before rubber/plastic pants were invented. The pattern is on my Flickr account.
These lingered on for a few years after the Second World War ended but faded away by the mid-1950's.
ghastly things, aren't they? The 50s never were what nostalgic people think they were.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine the smell? Wet wool is one thing....this is another.
ReplyDeleteWool does have the advantage of feeling warm even when it is wet, so there's that.
ReplyDeleteI used cloth diapers for my girls - born in '62 and '66, and lined them with paper towels to make cleanup easier. I've never understood the allure of disposables when you have an automatic washer in just about every home, and we won't even go into the wastefulness of them whole industry.
Great post, thanks for writing
