Quote of the Day
Time is: Too slow for those who wait,
Too swift for those who fear,
Too long for those who grieve,
Too short for those who rejoice,
But for those who love Time is Eternity. ~ Henry van Dyke

Come To The Dark Side (We Have Cookies)
The annual all-county drill is ten days away, and as a special treat I have taken Xena with me to the final planning meeting where we were briefed on changes to the scenario (last year we crashed an airplane, this year we're planting an IED on the university campus). We are driving back to the office.
She: I thought the bomb was going to be set off outside.
Me: Nope, in the performing arts center during a concert. Do you know why?
She: Um....more injuries because it's an enclosed space?
Me: More severe injuries. And why is this?
She: Debris?
Me: And don't forget contained blast waves. You are learning, grasshopper.

I'll Pass On The Whale, Thank You
"MUSHI KUJIRA (Boiled Whale or Bass). Two pounds of fish; one half teacupful of syou (sp); orange and lemon skin; two long, large radishes; two tablespoonfuls of vinegar; salt, and a dash of cayenne pepper.
Take off all bones and slice the fish daintily in long slices, and then in half-inch dice. Sprinkle with salt, and leave for about fifteen minutes. Cut radishes in long, even, delicate strips. Boil for a few minutes, strain, then add half a cupful of syou sauce and two tablespoonfuls of a fine vinegar. When it boils, drop in the fish slices. Boil up, then push to back of range, and, covered tight, let it simmer for half an hour. Grate the peels of half a lemon and half and orange, and sprinkle over the fish, after having removed it to a hot platter. Serve with boiled rice."

Poor Planning
Note to regional coordinator: if you must send me to a computer class at the state police training facility, try not to schedule it next to the room where they are running an active shooter scenario.
Quote of the Day
When, in disgrace with Fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least,
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate.
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings,
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

The Road To Hell
I sent the spousal unit an email this afternoon, wishing him a Happy Anniversary. I was so proud of myself for remembering.
And of course he had to email me back pointing out that our anniversary is tomorrow.

More Entertaining Ideas
Of all the mid-century cookbooks in my small collection, this is one of the worst. Written as it is to promote a food company’s products, almost every recipe calls for a canned, jarred or frozen short-cut – not that there’s anything wrong with that as long as it’s an honest short-cut – and some of the dishes should be against the Geneva convention. The following, for example. Oven-baked chicken is a comfort-food classic, but when it’s flavored by adding a quarter cup of curry powder to Bisquick?
From the chapter Easy Buffets:
CRUSTY CURRIED CHICKEN
12 large chicken breast halves
½ cup shortening (part butter)
2 cups buttermilk baking mix
¼ cup curry powder
1 Tablespoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
Wash the chicken breasts and pat dry. In each of two baking pans, 13x9x2, melt ¼ cup shortening over low heat. Mix baking mix, curry powder, salt and pepper in paper or plastic bag. Shake 2 or 3 pieces of chicken at a time in bag until all are thoroughly coated. Place chicken breasts in pan, turning to coat each with shortening. Arrange skin side up in pan; cover and refrigerate.
About one hour before serving, heat oven to 425⁰. Bake chicken breasts uncovered 50 to 55 minutes or until tender.
