Fascism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel
proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind
you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove
anything you feel is unlike you…It doesn’t walk in saying, “Our programme means
militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution.” ~ Michael
Rosen
Haven't seen that before, but, it covers the lot. Makes me think about what the self-described first world democracies think they're doing and why we're letting them do it.
ReplyDeleteThose up here in the frozen north who were unhappy with the former government, and may end up unhappy with the new one, have been quoting a lot of Benjamin Franklin and Sinclair Lewis for a decade, but I like your quote better as it spells out expectations/soft sell vs actuality.
Succinct and direct. And painful.
ReplyDeleteCan we forward this to a couple of politicians - and a few governors?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the frozen north, I was *most* impressed with the fact that your Prime Minister met the refugees at the airport, and than one of his "body guards" (what's the Canadian equivalent of the Secret Service?)seemed to be a Sikh. You wouldn't find that in the so-called melting pot below the Great Lakes.
Canada's new Minister of Defence is Bosnia and Afghan war veteran and former deective Harjit Singh Sajjan . So much better than our former Defence Ministers who have all been civilians. Usually it's the plain clothes RCMP that provides security for the PM. The Minister was there as part of the welcoming committee of federal, provincial, and local politicians who all wanted their pictures taken with the first planeload of refugees to land to send the message that these people are welcome.
ReplyDeleteHere's a pic of his being sworn in by the Govenor General, in full regalia.

And, yes, the media loves him and his big smile.
Lady Anne - this needs to be sent to Governors, Congressmen, Senators and all High School Seniors. Truthful and to the point. Thank you, Shay.
