Somebody Up There Is Testing Me

The Health Department will have a booth at the Cultural Fest this weekend, and I am scheduled to do a presentation on Emergency Preparedness at 2:30.

Right after the local police department gives a presentation on the theory and practice of traffic stops.  To an audience that will be 75% African American.

  1. I don't suppose you could get them to flip the times, do you? Otherwise, you may be preaching, not to the choir, but to an empty church.

  3. Wear your splints and add an extra: emergency preparedness for people with injuries/disabilities. Everything I've ever seen on getting prepared assumes people are able bodied.
Whoever booked these events back to back has some explaining to do.

  4. The PD threw in a taser demo, just for the heck of it.

  5. Oh, cute. Lessons in DWB - Driving While Black.

We used to have a fellow at our church - colonel at Aberdeen Proving Grounds - who drove a splashy red car. He finally got vanity tags (which cost the earth in Maryland) with his last name, just so the police would stop short of a strip search every time he got pulled over for some minor infraction. "Yes, it's mine. No, I didn't steal it. Yes, I am in the military."

  6. Tasers? Really? How equipped is the PD to deal with potential death by taser? Apparently their safety has been overstated. Wonder how much trouble you'd be in if you asked? And who are they planning to tase?

Why don't they just bring lunch and give everyone food poisoning while they're at it?

  7. For what it is worth -- the Chief of Police was there, and he is African-American.

Right up front, the officer demonstrating the taser told the crowd that every officer who is issued a taser has to be tased as part of his/her training. He admitted to having been tased three times.

  8. Good to know. They should do the same kind of training up here as we've had probs with improper use of them.
