Quote Of The Day

The Old Hunting Grounds, by Worthington Whittredge

'Tis all a myth that Autumn grieves,
For, watch the rain among the leaves;
With silver fingers dimly seen
It makes each leaf a tambourine. ~ Samuel Minturn Peck

Holiday Crafts - A Cat Pumpkin from 1958

From the October, 1958 Pack-O-Fun.  I downloaded it from the Internet Archive but when I went back to look, it was no longer there.

But there is no place so far away that one can escape one's own self.  The country of the heart is always the same. ~ Gladys Taber

Tatting - A Vintage Scalloped Edging

I don't remember exactly where I got this, but from the layout/typeface it was published in an older Workbasket, probably from the 40's or 50's.

And as a bonus, you now know how to remove grease spots from a silk dress.

September is National Preparedness Month

The theme for 2022 is "A Lasting Legacy - the life you've built is worth protecting."  And don't forget your pets.

Est Miraculum!

image from the Guardian (UK)

So, remember that letter we got from the IRS last winter? We received a follow-up today, basically saying you guys were right, we were wrong, you don't owe us any money.

Thank You So Very Much, Jenny McCarthy

Vintage Children's Crafts - Watchbands from Plastic Bottles

These very nice watchbands are from Make It From Odds And Ends by Edna Clapper, who was one of the creative geniuses behind Pack O Fun magazine and the sock toy book that I think I have already linked to. It's a one-hour borrow at the Internet Archive.

(although personally I see them made in scraps of Ultrasuede or pleather).

The Online Bookshelf - Really So Stories by Elizabeth Gordon

In an obvious homage to Kipling's Just So Stories, this 1924 book tried to walk the line between entertainment and useful information.  I don't know if it succeeded, but the illustrations by John Rae are lovely.  Free download at Project Gutenberg.

Wait - What?

As part of an annual fundraiser for the Boys and Girls' Club, my husband has offered to rappel off a downtown hotel - for a fee.  So far his online donation site shows almost a quarter of the necessary sum, all of it contributed by members of my family who are evidently united in their eagerness to watch him jump off the roof of the Marriott.
