Quote of the Day

This boy is Ignorance.  This girl is Want.  Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. ~ Charles Dickens

You should not be afraid of someone who has a library and reads many books; you should fear someone who has only one book; and he considers it sacred, but he has never read it.  ~ Friedrich Nietzsche (attributed).

Vintage Woodworking - A Christmas Circus from 1937

From the January, 1937 issue of Modern Mechanix, a wooden circus to thrill your kiddies with at Christmas.  I can only assume that this issue came out in mid-December!

A free download from the Internet Archive.  For general interest, there's an article on p.68 all about how Disney does their sound effects, "illustrated by Walt Disney" (or perhaps his studio).

Quote of the Day

On ';...p'[[[[[[[[[[[[;';///////////////////3'

Upon returning to my desk
having left it temporarily in search of biscuits,
I discovered my cat had written a poem
on my laptop.

It was called ';...p'[[[[[[[[[[[[;';///////////////////3',
and constituted one of her more difficult pieces,
but it was the kind of poem
which rewarded repeat reading.

I was struck by its experimental structure:
the absence of line breaks,
indeed, not one single space between any
of the poem's 10,000 or so characters.

One of the work's central motifs-
'jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk' -
was, by turns, unsettling and comforting,
while the symbolism of '################',

hinted at our 21st century preoccupation with social media.
And who could not be moved by that devastating final line,
its message of hope piercing the heart like an arrow:
'```````5555======================'.  ~ Brian Bilston

Republican Reality Check

It's no longer news that the husband of the Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler is being investigated for rape.  What is news is that he raped the woman with whom the Zieglers had previously engaged in three-way consensual sex, and who told Ziegler that she was not interested in him, but in his wife.

Christian Ziegler is chairman of the Florida Republican Party.  Bridget Ziegler has been actively promoting anti-LGBTQ+ policies in the state.  UPDATE:  this kid has it right.

Vintage Tatting - A Medallion from Holland

From Beyer's Handwerkboeken Serie H No. 40, Frivolite, an airy medallion that would work as a Christmas ornament (stiffly starched). No date given, but probably late teens/early 20's.

The book is in Dutch but if you tat, you should be able to work out the pattern (central and second row of rings are 8-8, large rings in the third row are 6-3-3-3-3-3-3-6).  From the Antique Pattern Library - scroll down.

Quote of the Day

Religious institutions that use government power in support of themselves and force their views on persons of other faith, or of no faith, undermine all our civil rights.  Moreover, state support of an established religion tends to make the clergy unresponsive to their own people, and leads to corruption withing religion itself.  Erecting the 'wall of separation between church and state,' therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society.  Thomas Jefferson.

Paper Crafts - A Cat Cutout

From a booklet rather starkly entitled Crafts For The Very Disabled and Handicapped, a cat outline that was designed to be colored on a piece of unbleached muslin to make a dresser scarf. I think it would make a better cutout for an applique or a holiday window decoration, personally.

The booklet has a variety of occupational-therapy craft ideas and is available at archive.org as a one-hour loan.

Other Crafts - A Literary Game for Hallowe'en from 1882

Found in Chapter IX, "Halloween and Other Amusements," a literary guessing game for home parties.  From the American Girl's Home Book of Work and Play, a free download from the Internet Archive.  A safer alternative to some of the other suggestions which include melting lead and burning nuts to read the future.

If you are more actively inclined, costume ideas can be found in the chapter on sewing and doll's dressmaking (starting on p.235) and include a Normandy peasant, a Spanish dancer, and a marquise.

A bloom, where leaves are brown and sober,
Warm noons, and nights with frosty air,
And loaded wagons say, October. ~ Thomas Stephens Collier
