Quote Of The Day

There are flowers enough in the summertime
More flowers than I can remember
But none with the purple, gold and red
That dyes the flowers of September! ~ Mary Howitt

Beadcraft - Costume Jewelry from 1947

From the English women's magazine Britannia and Eve, February 1947.  Something to cheer a war-weary wardrobe (clothes would still be rationed in Great Britain for another two years). Left-click to enlarge.

Vintage Advertising - Imperial Airways

From The Tatler, Summer 1934.  Six and a half days to Calcutta, nine to Cape Town!  I would like to see the itineraries for these flights, just for the names of the stopovers.

(For the cheapest flight you're looking at approximately $10,000 in today's dollars).

There is space on everyone's bookshelves for books we've outgrown but can't give away.  They hold our youth between their pages. ~ Enid Blyton

Vintage Crochet - A Yarn Doll And Her Wardrobe from 1944

From The Workbasket magazine, December 1944, comes this 10 inch doll and her clothes, to be made of leftovers of Germantown (worsted) yarn and crochet string.  The full issue is a free download from the Antique Pattern Library.

I think if I were going to make this as a gift/toy today, I'd use a styrofoam ball for the head and put a little tacky glue to keep the yarn securely covering it.

A Word To The Wise

September is National Preparedness Month.  Between the wildfires and this year's hurricane season, it would be a good time to revisit your family's emergency and communications plans.

Housekeeping Crafts - A Mothball Snowman from 1951

From The Australian Home Journal, October 1951.   October in Australia being the herald of spring/summer, ladies getting ready to clean and store their winter clothes would have needed this little helper.  Left-click to enlarge.

I've posted this link before, but bound copies of this magazine from 1949 to 1952 can be downloaded from archive.org.

Vintage Magazines - Ladies' Home Journal, July 1934.

Reading the fiction selections in vintage women's magazines always makes me feel as though we're from a different planet, not just a different century.

But if you'll excuse me, I need to give Nora some instructions before Thompson brings the Packard around.  I'm due at my dressmaker's for a fitting - and afterwards I have a Junior League luncheon at the Country Club.

Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out "Unclean! Unclean!" ~ Leviticus 13:45
