O Tempora! O Mores!

My grandmother once told me the story of when she was a little girl and her older sisters decided to throw a Halloween party, circa 1915 or so.  One of their girlfriends decided to come as Charlie Chaplin, who was just beginning to have a great success at Keystone Films with his "Little Tramp"character.

She had to notify the police in their little Wisconsin town that she would be appearing on the street dressed in men's clothes.  They dispatched an officer to her home to escort her to the party, and then later that evening sent him to escort her back home.

Even more amazing, it was an all-girl's party.  I got the impression from something my grandmother said that this girl would not have been allowed to attend the party as Chaplin had there been boys present.

How interesting! I'm guessing a Little Bo Peep costume wouldn't have required a police escort.

As long as the skirt was no higher than eight inches off the ground...probably.
