Let Christmas not become a thing
Merely of merchant's trafficking,
Of tinsel, bell and holly wreath
And surface pleasure, but beneath
The childish glamour, let us find
Nourishment for heart and mind.
Let us follow kinder ways
Through our teeming human maze,
And help the age of peace to come.

What a lovely thought.
I haven't been able to discover who Madeline Morse is, but she published this poem in the Dairymen's News, probably in the late 19th or early 20th century. The commercialization of Christmas is not something new, alas.
