Quote Of The Day

When February sun shines cold,
There comes a day when in the air
The wings of winter slow unfold,
And show the golden summer there.  ~ Philip Savage

Home Projects - A Shelf From A Packing Crate, 1947

Another "Found Money" project from Woman's Day, August 1947.  This month's column had a number of tips including cutting your children's hair yourself, and renovating a chicken coop into a two-room house for a family of three (that would never pass a zoning inspection today but in 1947 people were desperate for housing).

You will notice something that all of the projects I've shown so far have in common, is the absolute minimum of instructions.  Either you already know how to do this kind of thing, or hey, it's not rocket science, you'll figure it out!

Quote Of The Day

For those Americans not serving in the military who persist in flying this flag for whatever misguided reason, I will continue to support your right to do so on your property.  But do not expect me to see you for anything else but someone who still supports the bondage and oppression of another human being who does not look like you.  Full stop. ~ Commandant Robert Neller, USMC (retired)

Sewing - Summer Outfits from 1947

There's seven inches of snow outside but, as promised - some summer playclothes from the June, 1947 Woman's Day.  Instructions, and diagrams to draft them yourself, are on my Flickr page.

And if that white swimsuit isn't a Claire McCardell knock-off, I don't know what is.

Utterly amazing.

Papercrafts for the Year of the Ox

(It's too cold out to post bathing suits).

For the Year of the Ox, those clever people at Canon-JP have a calf to be printed out and folded together.  Here's the free download.

Quote Of The Day

brush sketch by Endre Penovac

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree
Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I rued. ~ Robert Frost

Sewing - Makeovers from 1947

For those of us with a set of Navy officer's whites and a need for a new summer suit, the "Found Money" column in the Woman's Day issue of June, 1947  (we've seen this column before), is just the ticket.

And everybody has a striped pique summer evening gown just hanging around the back of the closet, right?

I think that this last project - a top made from a large silk scarf - is within a modern maker's grasp, however. Instructions are on my Flickr page.

The same issue has instructions for no-pattern summer playclothes and a swimsuit that I'll post next week.
