Vintage Tatting

 

A tatted medallion using a ring of hearts motif, pretty and unusual.  

My notes say this is from Workkbasket magazine, May 1950 - but I can't find it in the online copy.  Hmmm.

Vintage Tatting - A Traycloth motif from 1916

If you are getting started on your Christmas tatting already, the center motif from this tray cloth (first three rows) would, stiffly starched, make a classic snowflake (even if it does have eight points instead of six).  It's from a 1916 Bucilla tatting and crochet manual, with the instructions on p43.

(And if you do filet crochet, there are a variety of fantastic "La Belle et La Bete" beasts on pages 9-12.

Vintage Tatting - A Rosette from the 1920's

 

From Beyer's Frivolite, a free download from the Antique Pattern Library.  Publication date uncertain but probably early 20's. Stiffly starched, it would make a pretty Christmas ornament, either plain or with the addition of chrystal beads or tiny ribbons. EDITED TO ADD:  or, as blogfriend Sam pointed out, adorning a glass bauble.

I don't read or speak Dutch, but this is my translation:

Center - 5 rings of 8 ds/P/8ds. Cut thread.

First and only round:

Oval Ring of 8ds (join in the first picot of the center ring) 8ds, close.  Leave a short length of thread.

Large Ring of 8-3-3-3-3-3-3-36, close ring.  Leave a short length of thread.

Small Ring of 4 (join to first picot of Large Ring) 6-4, close.  Leave a short length of thread.

Another ring of 8 (join to same picot in center ring as first oval ring) 8, close.

Repeat this series 9 times, joining the last Small Ring to the first Large Ring.

Vintage Needlework Books - Anne Orr, Crochet, Cross-stitch and Tatting, 1923

 

Anything by Anne Orr is worth snapping up, and this one is a very nice 24-page booklet with a variety of projects, including collar & cuff sets, edgings, and a "between-meal cloth" (my between-meal cloth is also my during-meal cloth and my after-meal cloth, but I digress).  A free download from the Antique Pattern Library.

Vintage Tatting - An Edging from 1947

 

From Workbasket, October 1947, an intriguing variation on the standard "bunch of grapes" tatted Vandyke edging.  The entire issue (including another tatting pattern) is available as a free download from the Vintage Pattern Library.

It's worth noting that 1947 seems to have been the year that WB started running advertisements.

You'll have to enlarge this to read it - but from Butterick's Tatting and Netting, 1895, a pretty "insertion # 15" that would make a dandy bookmark.

If you tatted this up one side and down the other, joining at the small rings, you'd have a lovely Christmas bookmark.

Vintage Tatting - A Medallion from Holland

 

From Beyer's Handwerkboeken Serie H No. 40, Frivolite, an airy medallion that would work as a Christmas ornament (stiffly starched). No date given, but probably late teens/early 20's.

The book is in Dutch but if you tat, you should be able to work out the pattern (central and second row of rings are 8-8, large rings in the third row are 6-3-3-3-3-3-3-6).  From the Antique Pattern Library - scroll down.

Vintage Tatting - A Traycloth Medallion from 1916

 

From the Bucilla Blue Book #3, a traycloth with an edging of smaller medallions and a large one to go on each side.  The instructions are on page 43 - but if you know someone who is particularly skilled at filet crochet, point them to the salamander* cake cover on pages 26-27.  The book is available as a free download from the Antique Pattern Library (but they always welcome donations).

*I think it's a salamander.
