Vintage Images - A Red Poppy
image from the Graphics Fairy
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. ~ John McCrae

Vintage Images - Flags of Scandinavia
image from Pinterest
Happy Syttende Mai (belated) to my Norwegian readers - if I have any. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that without Scandinavian immigrants, the Midwest as we know it today would not exist.

Eternal Vigilance
And an eighty dollar child gate - is the price of freedom from Little Man and Batdog sneaking into the laundry room to snack on cat poo.

A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad. ~ Theodore Roosevelt

Tempus Done Fugited On Me
watercolor by Charles Rennie MacKintosh
I just lost a day - I've been under the impression for the past four hours now that it was Tuesday (which is why the usual Tuesday needlework project was just posted).
Is this happening to everyone else?
Sewing - A Beach Coat from 1951
"Just a towel - So useful for the beach girl, just a large towel and she has a draped coat for use. So easy to make." And with summer just around the corner (unless you live in the Midwest, where the weather keeps trying to convince us that it is still February), a timely project.
Left click to enlarge, or have the fun of looking for the original in the Australian Home Journal at archive.org. You are warned - the link is to their run of issues from 1949-1952.

The climate is like a rowboat; you can only tip it so far before you get to the other stable state, which is upside down. ~ Elizabeth Kolbert

Aunt Martha's Workbasket, December 1937
Crocheted panholders and a poinsettia refreshment set of coasters and a pitcher mat. Two quilt patterns - "Save-all" - to use up every scrap you have, even the tiniest, and one for "Ring Around The Star." Transfers for the cross-stitch pets on the cover would set you back the magnificent sum of twenty-five cents.
The download is available at the Antique Pattern Library.

Parabola
1. a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side. The path of a projectile under the influence of gravity ideally follows a curve of this shape.
2. What happens to the liquid when someone slips while moving a freshly-made bowl of strawberry Jello™ into the refrigerator and tries to catch the bowl but only manages to flip it up on one end.
It looks like we ritually slaughtered a goat in there.

I thought that spring must last forevermore; For I was young and loved, and it was May. ~ Vera Brittain
