From Tipnut, a nifty little vintage booklet on making tea-aprons from hankies.

Oh boy, I'm going to be telling my age here but I can remember when people made those.. I thought they were so cute... but unfortunately you can't buy those big hankies anymore uness you use mens red or blue ones.

Years ago, when making vintage-style hankie quilts was popular, you could buy panel prints in the fabric stores that were reproductions of vintage handkerchiefs. I haven't seen any recently, and I don't know anyone who would actually cut up a real vintage hankie!. I think you're right, if you wanted to make one of these today you'd have to use a package of bandannas.
