And, with regard to young women, everlasting book-reading is
absolutely a vice. When they once get
into the habit, they neglect all other matters, and, in some cases, even their
very dress. Attending to the affairs of
the house; to the washing, the baking, the brewing, the preservation and
cooking of victuals, the management of the poultry and the garden; these are
their proper occupations. ~ William

Well, I wouldn't call it a vice, but a good book will certainly slow down the housework. Oddly enough, Eldest Daughter's mother-in-law also considered reading a "bad habit". She'd pitch a fit when Eldest Daughter took the kids to the library, and told her "nothing good will ever come of that".
"I am obnoxious to each carping tongue
That says my hand a needle better fits."
My kids refer to the library as "mom's pusher" as in "Your pusher called. Your books on hold are in."
For millennia, nothing has scared an insecure man more than an educated woman.
reading is not a vice, it is an essential part of every day. And I taught all 6 of my daughters that particular fact. All grandchildren now also believe that you must read to live, and thrive. tho a few have come up crossways with a teacher or 2 when they are caught reading other then the textbook of the moment.
