He is re-roofing the house with his brother and three teenaged
boys. When I walked in the house this morning after
running an errand I noticed the first aid kit had been brought out of the
cupboard.

Taking the First Aid kit is not an indication of current injuries but proactive measure for the future?
Why doesn't he have a tether and harness/safety belt? I'm all for diy having renovated more than one house back when I could, but we were always safety conscious, even doing two storey high hallways on an staircase ladder. I'd hate to lose a kid for lack of a few dollars in safety gear.
Oh, gracious. Shay, just tell him that him falling off the roof will give YOU a heart attack, and then it's ALL his fault for both those things!!! and have him hire a roofer!!!

Possibly. He almost fell off the roof this morning.
