Ziplock bags and those see through zippered carrier style bags that Knitpicks usually has in 3 different sizes help, as do stinky things that cats don't like, like marigolds that seem too strong for their sensitive little noses. Worse case, there's cayenne pepper powder which works as long as you don't breathe it in. I store yarn wound into pucks in the plastic zipper cases that sheets and blankets come in.
