Ah, the holiday battle of "is it a christmas tree or an overly large pet toy?" Hence my tree is tied to two heavy bookcases in case Little Miss Maine Coon tries to climb it.
My light weight boys used to climb the artificial tree, tuck themselves in at the back where they thought I didn't see them and sleep. I've only had one cat who knocked down a tree. She raced up one I thought was well anchored, and toppled it, smashing my mother's collection of glass ornaments. Since then, I've not had anything breakable on the tree, and keep a squirt bottle handy to teach new arrivals the penalty for tree climbing. (mean old mum)

We are again going with a swag over the archway and hanging ornaments on it.
