River Landscape, Gustave Courbet (1869)

All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was. ~ Toni Morrison

I didn't recognize the painter's name, and thought he was just another mid-Victorian landscape painter, but with a less romantic, more rugged view of his subject. Who knew he was so controversial and the father of French realism, a real rule breaker, among other things. Beautiful painting; oddly Canadian type of subject matter, given the amount of water, rock and untamed bush we have.
Thanks for this; it's gorgeous.

It looks northern Michigan piney woods to be but yes, I had never heard of Courbet either.
