Why don't builders use that slide out bed for the 300 sq ft condos they're building now? Even Detective Murdoch's 'modern' home supposedly built by Frank Lloyd Wright had a pull out sofa/bed very much like this. File this under wishful thinking if we ever remodel.
I love things like this. Huge fan of "Tiny Nation" - but I could never live tiny. Give up my books or fabric stash? Never. But this is good to pretend.
Way back in the day, Armstrong tile ads used to feature a room that had been made over using their products and had some of the most useful examples of the good use of space. Usually the room was a rec room/kitchenette/bath/sleeping area/lounge, like transforming a basement or cottage into a bachelor apartment. I've loved space efficient design ever since and measure everything obsessively every time we move before we arrange things.
Detective Murdoch is a fictional early 1900s detective in Toronto; TV series adapted from novels featuring him. It's harmless and a bit campy. His wife has money, so decided to commission FLW to build them a modern home, complete with a dishwasher, microwave, dimmable pot lights, and roll out sofabed. Toronto (my home town) is full of tiny condos, and not a murphy bed in sight. They must be a nightmare to furnish, especially as people are working from home now. I like the pullout as you don't have to worry about whether the wall is structurally sound enough to hold it and it fits where lower cupboards would be. There's a large, low, clean/finished storage spot in our basement rec room that would fit a roll out queen bed with no problem and space left over. The cupboards are awkward, and a finished box to roll in a bed instead would work. Now to persuade the other half. I printed the plans just in case I find a carpenter.
