This ... interesting little craft from the February, 1951 issue of Workbasket magazine falls in the category of "we can't do it anymore." Separate rubber canning rings haven't been a thing for at least forty years, if not longer. I wonder what you could substitute?

there are silicon ones sold from - where else - our not so benevolent overlords at amazon. there is a company, also on amazon, Viceroy Reliable Seal, that makes actual natural rubber ones for clamp down regular mouth jars.
I have seen these crocheted over the metal rings.
My grandmother had a dozen of these! I know she gave some to my mother, but by the time my sister and I got married they had all dry rotted or something.
