The older I get, the more jealous I am of people whose eyesight changes so they can see size 30 thread and a tiny needle without glasses and a magnifying glass. I have some beautiful vintage patterns in a box (somewhere) that I'll never do, and might end up framing and covering a wall with. I like this place mat. Nothing like a bit of lace to take the edge off a hard day.
I learned from the old Patons (US version) of "First Steps in Crochet", then went on to Mon Tricot patterns books. Still have my 70s Mon Tricot knitting stitches which has great how-tos for crochet and knitting techniques. US/Canadian terms are the same; UK and Australian are a bit different. The worst is figuring out what size hook to use as they're all different and all changed in the 70s, as knitting needles sizes did. Just part of the joy of vintage patterns.
I can't crochet but I can tat! Not many of us who still do so that is why I love your posts on old Workbasket patterns. One should always have some lace in one's home otherwise it is just a house.

I'm just jealous of people who can crochet.
