Do you ever get the feeling that a cat is just waiting for you to wise up and learn cat so you can have a real conversation instead of just cat mush baby talk?

Our cats have never ate yarn, but we had one that ate sewing thread. She'd sit on the machine and hew on the thread as it came past while I sewed, and reach up under the machine to pull out the bobbin thread so she could swallow it. We'd come home and find thread wrapped all around the chair legs, down the stairs, up and down, around and around. After the third surgery to remove upwards of 35 yards of polyester from her gut, the vet offered to put in a zipper.

Curling ribbon. Or any other narrow ribbon, but ESPECIALLY curling ribbon - my sister's cat will sit on it, hiss if you pull on it, and chew until it's in shreds (we think it's something about the texture against her teeth). With the predictable gastric consequences.

Two words - rubber bands. And yes, they do slap the cat in the bum when extracting them from that end.
