From the 1960 edition of McCall's Golden Do-it Book, here are some beginner, straight-line knitting projects and quick to make. This marvelous book is available for one-hour loan only at the Internet Archive.
One year our grandmother made my sister and me winter hats for Christmas. They were simply knitted rectangles with the front edge turned back to make a sort of brim and then folded in half and sewn up the back. My sister's hat had three little pom-poms along the top of her head. Mine had one large one at the peak in the back. I cannot tell you how many times kids yanked that pom-pom and my hat fall off my head! I BEGGED her to remove it and put little ones across the top. "Those are for babies like your little sister." I ended up removing it myself and tucking it that point to make the back of the hat more rounded. My grandmother was not amused.
There's an old (pre-WWI) German knitting pattern that I have filed somewhere where the pompom is pulled forward to meet the rolled up cuff. Pretty in an odd sort of a way, but still a target.
