And they even have a retirement plan! At least, the ones who look for landmines do. When they get tired of it they retire and live out the rest of their lives just playing around.
When I was in my teens, I was so shy my nickname was The Mouse. I've always had a soft spot for the little critters, even using safe traps and fixing them a lunch before I carry them out to the wood pile. (And The Squire is just as crazy as I am.) I doubt a rat would bother me.

Me? I'd freak out if a rat came at me in the rubble. Shrieking would be heard for miles.

Do Rescue Rats get tiny super-hero capes?
