Sewing - a 1954 skirt

This one-yard, one-piece skirt comes from Smart Sewing magazine, circa 1954. I have made one-yard skirts from similar patterns and have found them to be very versatile.

Complete instructions are here.

That's exactly how I make my pencil skirts--except I do have a pattern (10 cents at a thrift store back when you could still find pre-1980 patterns at thrift stores). But yes, exactly the same. And I get comments on it all the time! I love having a back kick pleat instead of a slit.

I used the instructions from a book of patternless sewing by Mary Brooks Picken called "Sew Magic," published in 1950. It called for the pattern to be drafted directly onto the fabric, using one's own measurements. I made it at least half a dozen times.

It's very adaptable; I made it in denim with a mock felled seam up the front and welt pockets, back in the days when I had time to make welt pockets! I also made it in flannel, gabardine and linen.

cute and I'll give it a try.
Finding the 54 inch fabric will be my challenge now.

Yeah, the yardage on all these old patterns is based on a much smaller size range. Take a look at the skirt here as well:
